Venue
The conference will take place at the city campus of the University of Antwerp, in the ‘Hof van Liere’. The ‘Hof van Liere’ consists of a magnificent 16th century dwelling and adjacent historic buildings, built by the Jesuits in the 17th century. Together they form an oasis of quietness in the heart of the city centre.
The conference site will be The Grauwzusters Cloister in Lange Sint-Annastraat. This building has a great history: long ago, nuns cared for victims of the plague within the cloister’s gloomy, grey walls. But when the last ‘Grey Sister’ left the cloister in 1999, the Flemish Government sought a new purpose for this building. The condition was that the new occupants should continue the building’s great tradition of providing services to society. So it became a conference venue for the University of Antwerp. Architects Van Broeck and Meuwissen managed to find a wonderful balance between historic and modern architecture: the façade of the Grauwzusters Cloister has remained almost unchanged, and its interior has also retained its authentic intimacy, while the courtyard, with its glass roof, is now a stylish reception and catering space. Vortex 2019 will be held in the chapel of the cloister, a unique and memorable setting for a scientific meeting.
